The truth about unintended pregnancy and abortion in America.
Each year more than 3.1 million American women experience an unintended pregnancy. It's not just someone you know, it's someone you love.

These are the real facts about abortion in America, not the hype the anti-choice forces want you to believe.

Unintended pregnancy is a common experience.
In the United States, about half of all pregnancies are unintended.

Of the 6.4 million pregnancies in 2001, 3.1 million were unintended. Of those, nearly half resulted in live birth (44%) and abortion (42%). 14% ended in miscarriage.

Women use a variety of methods to prevent unintended pregnancies.
The truth is that birth control isn't always effective. Nearly all women report using contraception at some point in their lifetimes.

In 2002, 98% of women reported that they have used at least one type of contraceptive method to avoid or delay pregnancy.

Most women seek abortions early in their pregnancies.
While opponents of choice have invented the term "partial-birth abortion" and have implied that most abortions occur late in the term, virtually all abortions occur in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Nearly nine in ten abortions occur in the first trimester (within 12 weeks of pregnancy). Abortions that occur after 20 weeks of pregnancy account for only 1% of all abortions.

If good doctors aren't there, who will be?
Due to intimidation and harassment by the anti-choice side, the number of abortion providers in the United States has declined drastically in the last decade.

Since 1992, the number of abortion providers has dropped by 24%. In 2005, 87% of US counties did not have an abortion provider. 34% of US women lived in a county without an abortion provider.
